Comedian Mimi Gonzalez is Michigan Equality's featured guest for December's Coming Out Story. Mimi grew up in Michigan (her hometown is Detroit) and graduated with a degree in journalism from Central Michigan University. She moved to New York City and quickly ended up on the Today Show in the feature, "The funniest Person on Wall Street." But as Mimi says, New York is a tough place to begin a career, so she headed out to San Francisco and became the comedian, "Mimi=Freed." Within a year, Mimi emceed a portion of the 1993 LGBT March on Washington and followed that up with appearances at music festivals and Prides around the country.
She has appeared in many television programs including, Ellen, The Gay Riviera, Funny is Funny, Que Loco and Maury Povich. If you look closely you can also see Mimi in the film, Bound.
After spending most of this year living and working in Provincetown, Mimi is re-locating back to New York City. She also has a home in the mid-Michigan area. While appearing in East Lansing at the Women and the Arts Festival, Mimi graciously agreed to talk with Michigan Equality's Nancy English about coming out, lesbianism, bi-sexuality and sexuality in general.
We hope you enjoy listening to this often funny, but also serious conversation featuring the one and only, Mimi Gonzalez!
