Julie Nemecek

This story is available in its entirety as downloadable audio at our Feedburner Podcast site here.

Julie Nemecek is a professor and taught at Spring Arbor college for 16 years. She recently came out as transsexual.

Prof. Julie Nemecek settled with the university after a mediation hearing. Prof. Nemecek brought a complaint against Spring Arbor due to discrimination against her by the university because she is transgender.

Prof. Nemecek has taught at Spring Arbor for 16 years and was a well respected faculty member until she began apearing on campus as transgender. She was not allowed on campus unless she portrayed a masculine appearance and was relegated to do all of her teaching online from home. In recent days she was fired by the university.

Prof. Nemecek is maried and has three grown sons. She is a Christian and a former Baptist minister.

Per the settlement, agreed upon terms by the parties will not be released. However, part of the settlement includes Prof. Nemecek leaving Spring Arbor University.

After the settlement Michigan Equality spoke with Prof. Nemecek about how she was feeling now that her case is over and she replied, "Joanne and I are very happy that the process is over and that a modicum of justice and fairness finally happened."
