Michelle E. Brown

Michelle E. Brown was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. An artist/activist strongly influenced by the socio-economic, political and human rights issues of the city and our times, she has used these challenges as a backdrop for her essays, poetry, performance pieces and childrenšs book. She was the featured author in March 2008 at several Southfiled, MI elementary schhols reading her children's book "Jack with The Curly Tail" to children in grades K-5 followed by writing workshops for youth. Her second book "Wild Fruit Hidden in Open Spaces: Musings in Prose and Poetry" is scheduled for release in May, 2008 Through her writing and activism, she has confronted the problems of affordable housing, community development and HIV/AIDS housing in Detroit. She has worked with teen mothers, homeless women with children and women recovering from the ravages of drug addiction. Advocating for youth empowerment, which is near and dear to her heart, she has worked with several youth initiatives.

Affiliations: Arts League of Michigan, Michigan Coalition for Human Rights, Motown Writers Network, Detroit Summer and serving on the boards of several organizations including Board of Governors Human Rights Campaign 2004-2008; Treasurer, Black Pride Society 2006-2008, Board Member, Ruth Ellis Center 2008.
