Dave Agema, Michigan national GOP committeeman, made a series of comments against people living with HIV and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities while speaking during the Berrien County Republican Party Holiday Reception this past Thursday at Pebblewood Banquet Hall in Bridgman. While speaking against marriage equality, Agema claimed that during his time with American Airlines he witnessed LGBT workers claiming a person living with AIDS as their partner simply so that person could get medical benefits. "Folks, they (gay people) want free medical because they're dying (when they're) between 30 and 44 years old," he said. "To me, it's a moral issue. It's a Biblical issue. Traditional marriage is where it should be and it's in our platform. Those in our party who oppose traditional marriage are wrong."

Voters in Royal Oak have passed Proposal A - with 54% voting for the ordinance - upholding a Human Rights Ordinance the Royal Oak Commission passed in March of this year. Across the United States, we get to exercise one of our most cherished rights - our right to select our leaders and provide our input on issues put to the ballot. Voters in Royal Oak have the opportunity to vote FOR Proposal A to protect equality in the workplace and in housing for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents of Royal Oak.

Just minutes ago, Judge Friedman announced that he will not issue a ruling today on if Michigan's ban on same-gender marriages violates the US Constitution. He will hold a trial on February 25, 2014 to help determine the facts of the case. That means that there will not be any same-sex marriage licenses issued today in Michigan - and the opportunity to have them has been pushed to next year. We will be posting information to our Marriage Equality Center as it becomes available.
